This exhibition comprises both natural and man-made themes, designed to illustrate the distance a photographic image can ‘travel’ with the help of imagination and artistic vision aided by modern technology, and shows how different the image can look at the end of this computerized ‘journey’.

The pictures on display have all started as photographs. Some have been slightly enhanced but still retain their true-to-life, documentary character, while others have undergone an extreme digital metamorphosis to end up as imaginary landscapes or objects that bear little or no resemblance to their original form.

This exhibition is the product of a recent journey I took through the American South West, in which I have attempted to capture a part of this vast & diverse country which to me encapsulates the essence of what is colloquially termed “American”.

The exhibition features colour photographs of urban commercial centers gleaming in glass, metal & sophisticated masonry as in San Francisco, Terra Cotta adobe structures of New Mexico, vibrant Mexican-influenced colours, sixties & seventies Americana, vast expanses of desert landscapes, endless highways, beautiful alternative culture street art in rough neighborhoods, rivers, canyons & grand natural vistas, nearly deserted country roads, & snow-peaked mountains all of which make up this fascinating landscape which has a flavor & feel that’s so unique to this part of America.

The inspiration for these works comes from American documentary photographers such as: George Tice, William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz, to name but a few, who so beautifully captured these urban & natural landscapes before me & who’s works came to life for me when travelling through their native land. Their work has influenced me for over 20 years of working as a press photographer for the Associated Press in the Middle East & Southeast Asia, & continue to do so now in my new career as a documentary photographer & digital artist. This exhibition is also a tribute to them.

But it is also a tribute to the American spirit, the American dream.

These pictures were taken in November 2008, a time when the United States underwent a paradigm shift in its political, cultural, socio-economic direction. A time when the American dream came true in the most spectacular & compelling manner as the American election campaign unfolded, captivating the entire world who watched that dream come true with the election of the first African-American president in its history.
